engineered-flooring

Wood flooring are extremely popular across the entire UK in both domestic and commercial properties. First time wood flooring buyers are often overwhelmed by the sheer choice and considerations that go into choosing the most suitable option. Together with Wood and Beyond we have put together a handy guide that goes through your options and common considerations.

Wood Flooring Types:

It is a common misconception to think that all wood flooring is alike. In fact, there are two very distinct types of wood flooring. One is called solid wood flooring and the second engineered wood flooring. Before we explain the differences, it is probably easier to explain the similarities. When fitted, both types look precisely the same as the difference lies below the surface in their construction technology.

Solid wood flooring – These are made from complete solid wood such as Oak for example. The wood is harvested directly from the tree, which makes the size of the boards limited based on the size of the tree. Solid wood flooring is extremely durable with the correct manner of cleaning and care will last for over 100 years. If you like period properties you will often see solid wood used throughout due to its ability to withstand years of use. While their solid construction makes the floor extremely strong it also contributes to its biggest drawback. Natural wood has a tendency to react to changes in temperature. In cold conditions the wood will contract and in hot conditions the wood will expand. It is therefore unsuitable for areas that may expensive humidity such as the bathroom or kitchen areas or even in entire properties that are located near a water source such as a river. Their complete wood construction gives them the nickname of ‘real wood flooring’, though as you will read later on the alternative type of engineered is made from solid wood as well.

prime-gradeEngineered wood flooring – These are made from solid wood as a top layer supported by three or four layers of Plywood, MDF and Softwood. Therefore when fitted, only the solid layer is visible which explains our earlier point that both types look precisely the same when fitted. Their varied construction makes engineered wood flooring immune to temperature changes, but not as strong as solid wood. Sanding a process that can rejuvenate the floor by removing a 1mm layer of old wood can be undertaken only a handful of times (depending on the thickness of the top layer) compared to many times in the case of solid wood flooring. Their biggest asset is their suitability in areas that wood flooring was never considered before such as the kitchen, basement or bathroom area. Furthermore, engineered wood is slightly more affordable as syntactic materials are less expensive compared to wood.

Wood Flooring Installation:

Another consideration is the type of installation. The cost of fitting wood flooring can sometimes equal the cost of the wood itself, thankfully TradesAdvisor allows you to quickly find and compare wood flooring fitters so together you can decide on the most suitable fitting method.

Grade of Wood Flooring:

By now you know that both solid and engineered contain natural real wood but in different quantities. Complete wood through and through in the case of solid wood flooring and as a top layer in the case of engineered wood flooring. Natural wood is broken-down into levels of grades. Grade is not an indication of quality, but an indication of how fine the wood is. Your choice of one grade over another will never influence the longevity of the floor that will be decided by the type and level of care. There are four grades to choose from:

select-gradePrime Grade – Prime grade wood flooring are cut from the middle of the tree which means that the floorboard will have the least amount of colour variations between the boards and knots are very few between. They are the most expensive of the four and suitable for those looking for an identical look between the boards.

Select Grade – Select grade wood flooring are cut from the second ring from within the core of the tree which means that the floorboards will show some colour variations between the boards and some knots can be expected.

Natural Grade – Natural grade will feature sapwood and black knots of up to 30cm in size. Compared to the previous two grades, price difference between the three will become more substantial.

Rustic Grade – Also referred to as ‘country grade’, rustic is by far the grade with the most texture, as you cannot mistaken the floor for wood. Floorboards will feature sapwood and black knots of 35cm. There might be unlimited colour variation between the floorboards. Rustic is the most affordable option.

Wood Flooring Finish:

No matter which type of wood flooring suits your particular circumstances each flooring board must be covered in a protective top layer often called finish or coating. This layer provides basic protection from wear and tear. The most popular are:

Lacquer Based Finish - A layer that sits on the top of the wood, lacquer also serves as a waterproof coating. Lacquer is essential for floorboards that are fitted in damp areas.

Oil Based Finish - A layer that sinks into the wood, oil is the easiest to repair by simply adding more oil. It is the common replacement to wax that has been used in the past.

UV Oil Based Finish - A layer that comes across as slightly glossy, thereby helping hide damage caused by wear and tear.

If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.

Aberdeenshire Trading Standards have recently prosecuted two traders for breaching consumer protection legislation.

On Wednesday 7th March Alex Stewart pled guilty to one charge under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. Mr Stewart who traded as A&D Landscapes admitted to a misleading omission in that he failed to provide his name and address to a consumer. He received a £400 fine.

Alan Sutherland , who trades as Kintore Roofing, pleaded guilty to three charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, whereby he admitted misleading consumers.

Mr Sutherland has been fined £700 for misleading a consumer in relation to the existence of a 10-year guarantee. In addition to this fine Mr Sutherland has been ordered to pay a compensation order of £1650.

Mr Sutherland also admitted to failing to provide two consumers with notices of their right to cancel their contracts – a requirement under the Cancellation of Contracts Made in a Consumer’s Home or Place of Work etc Regulations 2008. This failure led to the consumers being misled as to their legal rights. Mr Sutherland was admonished on both these charges.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Trading Standards Service hopes that these convictions will send out a message to all traders within Aberdeenshire that unfair commercial practices will not be tolerated by consumers, Trading Standards or the Courts.

Did you know that 58m2 of grass can produce enough oxygen for one person for an entire day?

greenthumb-aberdeenA healthy, green, weed-free lawn – no matter how big or small - not only enhances a garden but brings kerb appeal to your home and adds value to a property.

The lawn provides a safe playground for our youngsters and an extension to the home for adults to relax from the stresses of the modern world.

Covering hundreds of thousands of lawns in concrete has dramatically decreased wildlife habitats. Healthy grass provides a feeding ground for birds, for whom it is a rich source of insects and worms.

greenthumb-aberdeen-2A concreted garden triples the amount of rainwater entering the drains and increases the risk of flooding. During the 1990s and the early part of the 21st century it is estimated that more than half a million lawns were ripped out to make way for decking, minimum maintenance gardens and off-street parking.

Thick grass prevents soil erosion, filters rainwater contaminants, and absorbs many types of airborne pollutants, like dust, pollen and soot that can cause serious health problems for some individuals. Turf traps an estimated 12 million tons of dust and dirt released annually into the atmosphere.

Grass is also highly efficient at converting carbon dioxide to oxygen, a process that helps clean the air. Grass absorbs gaseous pollutants such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, converting them to oxygen.

So, when you get into your garden this spring, and feel the grass beneath your bare feet, remember just how amazing the green stuff is!

A lush green lawn is the crowning glory for any home, but lawn maintenance can be time consuming and downright frustrating for many homeowners.

In a survey the RHS found ‘nearly 9 in 10 gardeners mow a lawn, but most regard looking after it as expensive, time-consuming and difficult’.

GreenThumb  treatments cost less than sourcing, buying, and applying similar products yourself.

GreenThumb save you time - employing our services ensures you can spend time in the garden doing what you want to do.

GreenThumb save you worry – worry that the products are being applied correctly and that they will work, plus the peace of mind of no longer having lawn chemicals stored under the sink or in the garage, where little hands can get hold of them.

Enjoy your lawn!

Architectural Design Services 4UArchitectural Design Services 4 u, specialises in creating professional building plans & architectural design drawings for home extensions, loft conversions and home alterations for clients. They are the type of drawings that would be required for Planning Permission applications and drawings that a builder can follow to produce your home extension, loft conversion or internal alteration.

Home extensions, loft conversions and alterations can add significant value to your home, as well as the benefits of a larger home. Architectural Design Services 4 u will talk through your ideas and desires for your new home extension or conversion, provide guidance and bring our valuable experience to produce your building plan designs and architectural drawings.

......... we take your ideas all the way through to Planning Permission and Building Regulation Submissions.

Find out how we can help you with home extensions, loft conversions, internal alterations, new builds, conversions, building plans, architectural design, planning permission applications or building regulation applications.... we would be happy to help.

How much will my home extension, loft conversion or alteration cost ?

Builders will, almost always, require a set of building plans or architectural designs of your home extension, loft conversion or home alteration before they are able to provide quotations.

So to get the overall costs of the project, do you need the architectural designs and building plans to be completed ?

Not quite. But how do you start the process, without committing to the initial costs of having the building plans or architectural design drawings being completed for your home extension, loft conversion or home alteration ?

This is where we are able to assist. By providing guidance and drawing upon our expertise and experience, we can help to explain everything.

Some of these other costs for your home extension, loft conversion or home alteration are for the architectural design or building plans to be produced (our principle service), planning application fees to your local authority, building regulations fees to your local authority, structural engineering (if required, a service we also provide) and any other costs that may be applicable to your potential project.

Having home extensions, loft conversions or home alterations should be exciting not daunting !

Having a home extension, loft conversion or home alteration can often seem to be rather daunting. However, it needn’t be ! In most cases, it is quite exciting.

Many options are available, from the internal layout of your home extension, loft conversion or home alteration, through to the external appearance of the extension… Therefore, embarking on an extension or conversion should be exciting and a lot of fun…. And that’s just at the designing phase !

We share this enthusiasm… we know how important your home is to you and your family… it simply helps that we have a real passion for what we do and enjoy the design process as much as you do !

Once you have all of the various costs that your home extension, loft conversion or home alteration would involve, it then comes down to selecting the various options from those available, and proceeding with the project. It sounds simple, doesn't it... actually, it is !

We hope you have found the information that you were looking for... but we would be happy to answer any questions you may have... so don't hesitate to call us.

OH, AND DID YOU KNOW ......

Fact : The Percolation Test

We also carry out Percolation Tests, if you are building a new house or an agricultural / industrial building, they shall require a soak-away test to be carried out before planning consent will be granted.

Percolation Tests for Soakaway Design

Why do a Percolation Test?

A soil percolation test is required to be carried out on the land where the septic tank system or sewage treatment plant soak-away is intended to be built.  It is a test that determines the rate in which soil absorbs a known volume of water.  This is to ensure that the land (soil) is suitable for a soak-away, and to ensure that the soak-away is designed properly.

A percolation test is ALWAYS required for septic tanks

The point to always remember....we can advise and make suggestions, but the great part is that the choice is always yours !
