Stewart Milne Homes North are currently seeking to engage with new subcontractors, from all trades who are interested in working on our projects in Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth and Inverness areas.

Our subcontractors form an integrated part of our onsite project team and we are seeking dedicated and committed individuals who would like to join us in our continued success. We have a number of exciting projects coming on stream over the next two years from apartments and affordable housing to luxury family homes.

We want our partners to find that working with Stewart Milne Homes is a profitable and enjoyable experience. Our ‘Work With Us’ initiative has ensured that our construction and commercial teams will work with you to allow you to become part of our success story with our extensive homes building programme.

Winners will be announced at a lavish awards dinner and ceremony on Friday 12th June 2015 at Aberdeen Football Club.

Apprentices on their construction career path with Stewart Milne Group

Fourteen apprentices have taken their first steps in careers in construction with leading house builder and timber systems manufacturer the Stewart Milne Group.

Over four years, the 2014 intake of apprentices to the business will gain the skills and experience to enable them to develop careers in a dynamic, growth industry with the National House Building Council (NHBC) five-star rated house builder.

Whilst apprenticeships were traditionally seen as a route into a trade for school leavers, the ages of the new apprentices range from 16 to 32, demonstrating that career changers as well as young people are increasingly recognising the wide range of careers, projects and progression opportunities available in the 21st century construction industry.

The current group, which was recruited last summer, includes many of the key skill sets required by the Stewart Milne Group as it implements an ambitious programme of growth within its homes divisions in Scotland and north-west England and its award-winning timber systems business with factories in Oxford and Aberdeen. They include six apprentice bricklayers, four apprentice joiners, two apprentice plumbers, an apprentice electrician’s mate and an apprentice roughcaster.

Apprenticeships with the Stewart Milne Group involve training on site and at college in the first three years, giving an apprentice the right mix of technical and practical skills. Trade apprentices then complete their fourth year on site. For their “at work” training each apprentice is also assigned a journeyman – an experienced tradesman who is their mentor – who works with them to develop their skills and confidence in their chosen role.

Karen Catto, Human Resources Director at Stewart Milne Group, says the apprenticeship programme has considerable benefits for the individuals on it and for the group as a whole.

“Apprenticeship training means that people gain the right skills for the job they want to do. It also enables people to earn while they are learning, which is attractive to many people today,” said Karen.

“As a business we find that the apprentices are keen, highly motivated people who want to learn and help our business to grow. The increasing age range within our 29-strong apprentice community also brings different perspectives and experiences into the business, which is very healthy, and demonstrates that more people are attracted to our industry because of the long-term prospects and good terms and conditions that we can offer them.

“Within the group we place great store on training and development and there are many examples of people have joined us as apprentices and ended up becoming senior managers or directors. As a privately-owned business we can recognise and reward talent and ensure that it is nurtured so people can progress as far as they are able or aspire to.

Opportunities at Stewart Milne Group

This year is an exciting year at Stewart Milne, not only are we celebrating our 40th anniversary, we are also celebrating fantastic growth across the business. With so many exciting new developments starting this year, we have over 100 vacancies covering a wide variety of skills and specialisms, for individuals who would like to be part of these new projects.

Over the coming weeks and months, we will be taking on skilled people from all trades backgrounds, including Bricklayers, Joiners, Painters, Plumbers, Electricians and Roughcasters. In addition, we are delighted to confirm that we have places for up to 15 apprentices this year. To support the increased numbers of operatives and apprentices, we are also looking for a Labour Workforce Manager who will manage and develop the operatives and apprentices.

At a higher lever we are keen to talk to Assistant Site Managers, Site Managers and Construction Managers, to manage our build programmes to reflect our 5 star Home Builder status and excellent health and safety record. Quantity Surveyors and Architectural Technicians also play a crucial part of the success of our Homes’ divisions and as such, we are increasing both our Commercial and Technical teams and will be delighted to talk to people with these backgrounds who are contemplating a move.

Furthermore, with so many new developments, we would like to hear from Sales Consultants looking for a new challenge. Whether you are a Sales Consultant with a background in house building, or a potential trainee from another sector, we are happy to hear from you.

Our Timber Systems division is also seeing immense growth and is enjoying a busy and varied workload supporting our own Homes divisions and other residential and commercial projects. We are looking for over 20 new Factory Operatives in Westhill and offer both day shift and night shift hours, plenty of overtime opportunities and an excellent target related bonus. We also have a crew bus that can pick you up and take you home again.

Every employee has a training and development plan, to help them progress in their careers.
